The selection process for the 2008-09 academic year will begin in December 2007. (See timetable.)

Admission FAQ

Participants in the Jackson River Governor's School must be nominated by their home high school. A selection committee from each school division reviews all data about each applicant and selects the finalists and alternates from that division. Application packets are available in each guidance office, or you can download an Adobe Acrobat (".pdf") file. Applications are due by March 15, 2007. Participants will be notified by April 23, 2007.

Applicants should

  • be currently enrolled in 9th or 10th grade. (A few 11th grade students also will be considered.)
  • exhibit above-average performance in most subjects, and superior performance in mathematics and science.
  • exhibit evidence of intellectual curiosity, analytical thinking, and imagination.
  • show evidence of aptitude, potential, and strong interest in science and mathematics.
  • demonstrate the extent to which he/she has taken advantage of opportunities or have overcome lack of opportunities in the local school/community.
  • have a sincere desire to attend the Jackson River Governor's School.

Selection criteria considered by the screening committee include:

  • Stanford/9 (if available) scores 90th percentile or above
  • DAT scores (if available) abstract reasoning score above average
  • Mathematics course grades Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II--B or above (preference given students who have also taken Trig)
  • Science course grades Biology--B or above (preference given students who have also taken Chemistry)
  • PSAT/SAT sores 90th percentile or above. It is highly desireable that applicants take the PSAT in their sophomore year.
  • Attendance consistent!
  • Teacher and Counselor recommendations

Timetable of Governor's School admissions process .

January Governor's School Director meets with guidance counselors and distributes application materials
December -February Application materials available at high schools.
Parent/student meetings at high schools.
Students start working on applications.
mid-to-late February Open house on DSLCC campus for interested prospective students.
March 1 Completed application packets due back to high school guidance counselors.
Mid-March Selection committee meets to rank nominees for Governor's School.
April 1 High schools report their selections and forward applications of nominees and alternates to the Governor's School.
April 20 Nominees notified of selection.
May 15 Last opportunity to withdraw from Governor's School for coming school year.
early June Evening orientation session for new Governor's School students and their parents.
early August New Governor's School students attend orienation session on the DSLCC campus.
late August Classes begin.
