April 4, 2000 Governor's School Receives ApprovalThe Jackson River Governor’s School, located at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, has received final approval from the Virginia Board of Education. Dr. Susan Rollinson, Director of the Governor's School, and Dr. Terry King, Dean of Instruction and Student Services at DSLCC, formally presented the proposal for the Jackson River Governor's School to the Virginia Board of Education at their March 23 meeting in Richmond. The Board waived first reading and gave final approval for the Governor's School to open for classes in August 2000. The Jackson River Governor's School is a joint effort of seven local school divisions: Alleghany Highlands, Bath County, Botetourt County, Buena Vista, Covington, Lexington and Rockbridge County. The school will give high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to take challenging math and science courses at DSLCC in the morning, and return to their home high school for afternoon classes in English, social studies and electives. A selection committee at each high school reviews applicants and selects participants and alternates. For more information about the Governor’s School, contact Rollinson at 540/863-2841 or visit the Governor's School web site at www.dslcc.edu/jrgs.
