Visit to the General Assembly

Courtney and Marianne meet Governor Mark Warner.

Students at the Jackson River Governor's School traveled to Richmond on two occasions this month to meet with members of the General Assembly and their aides. On Tuesday, January 14, all sixteen academic year Governor's Schools held a reception for members of the General Assembly. Students Brian M., Meghan M., and Christy R. had the opportunity to meet Governor's School students from around the state, as well as speak to legislators and Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine.

On Tuesday, January 21, students Marianne W. and Courtney G., along with Governor's School director Susan Rollinson, spent the afternoon in the General Assembly Building speaking to local legislators and their aides. Poster displays of all the Governor's Schools were on view in the lobby. When Governor Mark Warner passed through, the students were able to briefly discuss the Governor's School with him.

Governor's School Director, Dr. Susan Rollinson, said, "Our trips to Richmond were a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of the wide variety of Governor's Schools available in Virginia, and to demonstrate how each school addresses the educational needs of their local areas."

The Jackson River Governor's School meets on the campus of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College and serves high school juniors and seniors in the college's service area. The Governor's School offers advanced classes in science, math, and technology. Applications are now being distributed for the 2003-04 school year. Interested students can contact their high school guidance counselor or the Governor's School directly at 540-863-2841.
