Governor's School to Host Open House

February 6, 2007
[Due to inclement weather, the Open House and Science Fair have been postponed to Thursday, February 22.]

Students from the Jackson River Governor's School at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College are preparing for a Science Fair and Open House on Thursday in Warren Hall on the main campus in Clifton Forge. Here, Michael shows his project to fellow student John. Michael's project measures the ratio of lift to drag on three different aircraft wing designs.

The Jackson River Governor's School for Science, Math and Technology will host an Open House in conjunction with the annual Science Fair in Warren Hall on the main campus of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College on Thursday, February 15, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. A light breakfast will be served.

Judging of the science fair projects will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The top three projects will be entered in the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair to be held at Roanoke College next month. Public viewing of the Science Fair, in Room 420 in Warren Hall, is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

All interested students and their parents are encouraged to visit the Science Fair and/or Open House to find out more about the Jackson River Governor's School. Current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors must have completed Algebra II, and have a strong academic record and consistent attendance to be considered for admission.

The first year of the Governor's School, which includes mostly juniors, includes classes in pre-calculus, environmental science, statistics, a research project and chemistry or another elective. Second-year students take calculus, college physics and an elective. Possible electives include computer programming, engineering, meteorology, web page design, an independent research project or an internship.

Interested students may contact their high school guidance counselor or Sue Rollinson, coordinator of the Governor's School, at 540-863-2841 or srollinson@dslcc.edu for more information.
