The Governor's School in Field Ecology is held on the campus of Dabney
S. Lancaster Community College. It is taught by Dr. Steve Adams of DSLCC
and Jane DeGroot of Alleghany High School. Participants are selected from
students from area schools who have been nominated by their science teachers.
It is a three week course, providing "hands-on" science experience.
The students engage in many various activities,
including a leaf-collection trip to Roaring Run, a backpacking trip to Highland
County, and a trip to the Dismal Swamp and the Eastern Shore. The students
collect data from various ongoing research projects and present their findings
in a scientific paper.
